Ive not played any of the persona games or any of theirs except Catherine. Reading on this makes me wanna dive right into metaphor first

Honestly I think Metaphor, Persona 3 Reload and Persona 5 are great spots. They are all long! If you enjoy them then you will find the older games more palatable.

I share your view on the Persona series. Metaphor is a step in a much more palatable direction. I play Persona for the mechs, music and interesting plot threads and ideas... not to simulate Japanese high school life. Metaphor had all of the above, and I didn't even have to Google answers for some silly trivia exam (is that really what they teach in Japan!?!) two-thirds through the game!

Another game series that needs a kick in this direction is Pokemon. I'd wager a lot of its fans are adults now. When are we going to get over the trope of playing a child (usually around 10) being released into the wilds to become the grand champion of Pokemon? It makes even less sense in the latest game.

As always, you are singing my song! Yes nothing like googling quiz answers in my spare time ;)

This is a great idea!

Unfortunately, I wouldn't be surprised if it never happened.

The Persona series, with its young cast and emphasis on growing up, high school, and young adulthood, caters to high schoolers/twentysomethings. Starting nearly 20 years ago with Persona 3, each iteration of the franchise has steadily become more and more successful and has successfully captured the hearts/minds of the last couple generations now.

I absolutely see the appeal of growing up the Persona series, but if only for financial reasons, I can't see Atlus changing up the formula too much at this point. Unless, of course, they were to make a spinoff series called like Persona Adult or something.

Great post, Paul!

Thanks for the thoughtful reply! I’m happy if they want to continue to expand on the gameplay systems with different narrative scopes without the Persona branding. It seemed to have worked with Metaphor. I think Atlus would happy to cater to all types, especially if the sales figures are there.
